This release is essentially what happens when someone looks at another product and says “I can do much better....” and, basically, that’s exactly what this person has done. In essence, this is a copy of Lotus TV from Eye Records but that’s where the similarities end. As mentioned in the review for Eye’s some of the footage there was not of the greatest quality, as well as the formatting on some clips being woefully implemented.
First things first, and as you’ll notice from the track listing this one is a little more comprehensive, going as far as including the fantastic footage from the recent Montreux shows as well as the videos for album material Crimson & Clover and Chocolate Box. This all certainly helps towards the ‘complete appearances’ feel and all are welcome inclusions. On top of that, the menu structure has been tidied up and, at least to me, seems much clearer and sharper than before. The key attraction to this release however, is the quality of the source material. Lotusflow3r.com material aside, all of this has been very carefully compiled using the best quality rips around and many of it from HD. Really, some of this is simply stunning to look at and really does put Eye’s effort to shame. The ratio and formatting problems are also completely absent from this version, with everything displaying as it should (and helpfully, all the ratios for each clip are indicated on the artwork). I still have issues with the Superbowl stuff being included, but as this release is basically a ‘two fingers’ up at Eye Records at least it appears here in superior quality to theirs. You can argue until the end of time over whether you prefer free releases or pressed releases but you simply cannot shy away from, nor deny, the facts. This is superior in every aspect to Eye’s and if you have to choose between them, put that money back in your pocket and hunt this version down. You’ll be very happy you did.
