The F/PK team hit us with a 5 CD box of audience recordings from the Australian leg of the 1992 D&P tour. Being early in the tour, 2nd after Japan, the shows were pretty standard with few surprises compared to the later European shows, but nevertheless they are an enjoyable listen. This set contains 2 complete gigs, Melbourne 19 April (Discs 1 & 2) and Sydney 03 May (Discs 3 & 4). The Melbourne show was previously circulating in what seemed like 2 different recordings as the sound levels between the 1st half of the show and 2nd half differed so much, and was incomplete. This is a complete, much clearer sounding recording of the show. The Sydney show is the same source as previously circulating but the quality is greatly improved as it has been taken from a much earlier generation tape. Disc 5 contains “Bonus Recordings” of material culled from other recently transferred tapes that had previously been un-circulating or are in markedly better quality that what was previously available.
The recordings are pretty typical for 1992. VG+ at best, sounding thin with the usual screams and comments from fans close to the recording equipment. But the levels are consistent throughout so once you get used to the thinness of things they are enjoyable. The liner notes in the artwork give a history on the recordings and the work done to give the final result. A job well done indeed, but do not expect the quality of some of the recent 2009 fan releases – the source tapes just aren’t that good. The artwork, as with most fan releases these days, is excellent, and represents the package beautifully. 5 CD’s of nicely worked recordings with great artwork – and all for nothing (well, a bit of download time). Sounds good to me….
